IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 & Task 2 — Complete Guide 2026

The most-searched IELTS General Training topic — fully broken down with letter types, word counts, time splits, and the 4 scoring criteria.

IELTS General Training Writing has two tasks. You must complete both in 60 minutes.

Task 1: Write a letter of at least 150 words. Spend about 20 minutes. The letter may be formal, semi-formal, or informal. You must cover all three bullet points in the prompt.

Task 2: Write an essay of at least 250 words. Spend about 40 minutes. The task may ask for an opinion, a discussion, or a solution.
Task 2 carries twice the marks. If you run out of time, finish Task 2 first.

Writing Task 1 — The Three Types of Letters

IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 requires you to write a letter of at least 150 words in 20 minutes. The prompt tells you the situation, who you are writing to, and three bullet points. all three must be addressed. Missing even one bullet point reduces your Task Achievement mark.

Formal Letter
To someone you don’t know
  • Written to: company manager, landlord, employer, authority
  • Tone: professional, respectful, impersonal
  • Opening: “Dear Sir/Madam” or “Dear Mr/Ms [Name]”
  • Closing: “Yours faithfully” (Sir/Madam) or “Yours sincerely” (name used)
  • Examples: complaint letter, job application, request to authority
  • No contractions, no conversational language
Semi-Formal Letter
Professional acquaintance
  • Written to: manager, colleague, neighbour, team leader
  • Tone: polite and respectful but not overly stiff
  • Opening: “Dear Mr/Ms [Name]” or first name if appropriate
  • Closing: “Kind regards” or “Best regards”
  • Examples: requesting leave, informing a colleague, neighbour issue
  • Mix of professional and approachable language
Informal Letter
Friend or family member
  • Written to: a friend, relative, or someone you know well
  • Tone: conversational, warm, personal
  • Opening: “Dear [First Name]” or “Hi [Name]”
  • Closing: “Best wishes,” “Take care,” “Love,”
  • Examples: inviting a friend, sharing news, asking for advice
  • Contractions and casual language are acceptable
💡
How to identify the tone: Read who you are writing to. “Write to the manager of a company” → formal. “Write to your team leader at work” → semi-formal. “Write to your friend” → informal. Getting the tone wrong significantly reduces your Task Achievement score.

Writing Task 2 — Essay Types

Essay TypeQuestion PatternWhat You Write
Opinion / Agree-Disagree“To what extent do you agree or disagree?”State and defend your position clearly
Discussion (Both Views)“Discuss both views and give your own opinion”Present both sides, then give your view
Problem / Solution“What are the causes? What solutions can be offered?”Identify problems and propose realistic solutions
Advantages / Disadvantages“Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?”Weigh both sides and reach a conclusion
Two-Part Question“Why is this happening? Is this a positive or negative development?”Answer both parts clearly with separate paragraphs

Writing Assessment Criteria — All Four Bands

CriterionWhat It MeasuresCommon Mistakes
Task Response / Task AchievementHave you addressed all parts of the task? Is your position clear? (Task 2) Have you covered all three bullet points? (Task 1)Missing bullet points (Task 1) — going off-topic (Task 2) — unclear position
Coherence and CohesionIs your writing logically organised? Do ideas flow clearly from one to the next? Are paragraphs well-structured?No paragraph structure — overusing the same linking words — ideas jumping without clear logic
Lexical ResourceRange and accuracy of vocabulary. Are you using a variety of words accurately and appropriately?Using the same basic words repeatedly — incorrect word forms — spelling errors
Grammatical Range and AccuracyVariety and accuracy of sentence structures. Mix of simple and complex sentences.Only simple sentences — consistent grammar errors — subject-verb agreement mistakes
