IELTS General Training Writing has two tasks. You must complete both in 60 minutes.
Task 1: Write a letter of at least 150 words. Spend about 20 minutes. The letter may be formal, semi-formal, or informal. You must cover all three bullet points in the prompt.
Task 2: Write an essay of at least 250 words. Spend about 40 minutes. The task may ask for an opinion, a discussion, or a solution.
Task 2 carries twice the marks. If you run out of time, finish Task 2 first.
IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 requires you to write a letter of at least 150 words in 20 minutes. The prompt tells you the situation, who you are writing to, and three bullet points. all three must be addressed. Missing even one bullet point reduces your Task Achievement mark.

IELTS General Training uses a 9-band scoring system from Band 1 to Band 9. Each of the four modules is scored separately. The Overall Band Score is the average of the four module scores. It is rounded to the nearest 0.5 or whole band. Listening raw scores (out of 40) are converted to band scores using the same table as IELTS Academic. General Training Reading uses a different conversion table that is slightly more lenient than Academic Reading.

It is accepted by IRCC Canada for Express Entry and PR applications, by Australian DOHA for skilled migration visas, by the UK Home Office for selected work visa categories (IELTS General UKVI version), and by New Zealand Immigration for skilled migrant pathways. For Canada PR through Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), you need a minimum of CLB 7 — which equals Band 6.0 in each of the four skills individually (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
