Your IELTS overall band score is the average of your four section scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking), divided by 4. The result is then rounded to the nearest 0.5 band using this rule:
IELTS Listening has 40 questions across 4 parts. Each correct answer gives 1 mark. There is no negative marking. Your total raw score (0–40) is converted to an IELTS band using the official raw score table. The same test and table applies to both Academic and General Training students.
IELTS Reading also has 40 questions — 3 long academic texts (Academic) or 3 sections of shorter texts (General Training). The raw-score-to-band conversion is different for Academic and General Training. GT reading requires more correct answers to achieve the same band because the texts are slightly more accessible.
Writing and Speaking are marked by trained, certified IELTS examiners on four criteria, each worth 25% of the section mark:

To calculate your IELTS overall band score, add your four section scores (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) and divide by 4. Round to the nearest 0.5 band: .25 or below → round down; .25–.74 → round to .5; .75 or above → round up. Example: 7.0 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.5 = 26.0 ÷ 4 = 6.5 overall. The highest IELTS score is Band 9, described as an “Expert User” who has full operational command of English — appropriate, accurate and fluent. Each of the four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is also scored out of Band 9. Overall Band 9 means you averaged Band 9 (or very close to it) across all four sections. It is extremely rare and typically not required for immigration or university purposes — Band 7.0–7.5 meets most international requirements.
IELTS does not use a total score like 120/120. Instead, it uses a band scale of 1 to 9, in increments of 0.5 (e.g., 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). The overall band score is the average of all four sections rounded to the nearest 0.5. So the “full score” on IELTS is Band 9.0. There is no percentage score or points total — only bands.
IELTS Listening has 40 questions. 1 mark per correct answer, no negative marking. Raw scores (0–40) are converted to IELTS bands: 39–40 = Band 9, 37–38 = Band 8.5, 35–36 = Band 8.0, 32–34 = Band 7.5, 30–31 = Band 7.0, 26–29 = Band 6.5, 23–25 = Band 6.0, 18–22 = Band 5.5, 16–17 = Band 5.0.
